Overview

Few automotive segments are as competitive as pickup trucks, thanks to an intense rivalry among the Detroit Three automakers. Fiat Chrysler Automobile’s (FCA) RAM Trucks won’t give an inch to Ford and Chevrolet, though. The 2017 Ram 3500 remains a compelling option for any heavy-duty truck buyer, thanks to first-class powertrains and an impressive list of features.

The Ram 3500 is notable for its top-of-the-line towing and hauling capabilities; nearly countless configuration options; and its available rear air suspension with automatic load-leveling, which makes heavy-duty hauling feel effortless.

The Ram 3500 is available in six trim levels with up to three cab styles, two bed lengths, three engines, and six transmissions available depending on trim. From the bare-bones Tradesman to the luxurious Limited, there’s a 3500 to meet your needs. This popular heavy-duty truck starts at $33,245.*

The Perfect Ride for…

When you need to get the job done in style. The current-generation Ram 3500 was a Contractor’s Top 50 New Products pick for 2015 and earned the 2017 Gold Hitch Award for Heavy Duty Towing from TFLTruck.com. Whether you want to pick up an affordable and practical heavy-duty truck for the work week or outfit it with the latest luxury amenities for weekend adventures, you can do it with the Ram 3500.

Drive & Handling

For its powertrains, the 2017 Ram 3500 draws on some legendary names to offer the maximum capability for truck buyers. Both HEMI® gasoline and Cummins® diesel engines should help RAM keep pace with eternal rivals Ford and General Motors in the battle for truck bragging rights.

RAM actually offers two HEMI® V8 engines in the one-ton 3500. The first is a 5.7-liter unit that produces 383 horsepower and 400 pound-feet of torque, and the second is a 6.4-liter mill producing 410 hp and 429 lb-ft. Both engines are mated to six-speed automatic transmissions with rear-wheel drive or four-wheel drive. Because the Ram 3500 is classified as a heavy-duty vehicle, the EPA does not require fuel economy ratings.

RAM also offers multiple versions of a 6.7-liter Cummins® diesel inline-six with some truly staggering figures. Base versions with a six-speed manual transmission are rated at 350 hp and 660 lb-ft of torque, while versions with a six-speed automatic are rated at 370 hp and 800 lb-ft. But buyers can also opt for a high-output version with 385 hp and 900 lb-ft of torque. One other number to brag about is the Ram 3500’s quoted maximum diesel towing capacity of 31,210 pounds when properly equipped.

The Ram 3500 isn’t just about power, though. RAM offers five-link rear suspension and air-spring options, both of which are more sophisticated than what you get on competitor's trucks.

Alternative Options

The light-duty 2017 Ram 1500 is a versatile vehicle that boasts excellent cargo management options and an attractive interior. With exceptional fuel economy and driver-friendly features, the Ram 1500 is a great choice for less strenuous working conditions. The 2017 Ram 2500 is a happy medium between the 1500 and the heavy-duty 3500. The 2500 also offers a dedicated off-road model in the form of the Power Wagon®, which features beefed-up suspension, unique styling, and other upgrades for 2017.
